A dark Windows theme and a dark Open-Shell menu skin are separate settings. Select a suitable menu skin and test its text and highlight contrast. Do not assume that changing Windows mode recolors every custom resource or every Explorer extension.
What to do
- Identify the active menu style and skin. Save the current configuration before changing color or transparency options.
- Choose a built-in skin or a documented variation that supports your layout. Apply one appearance change at a time rather than importing an entire unreviewed theme pack.
- Test search results, disabled entries, selected entries, and nested submenus. A dark background alone does not guarantee that all label states remain readable.
- Compare the menu with Windows light and dark settings when your workflow uses both. Keep the combination that remains usable at your normal display brightness.
Check the result
Inspect small text and keyboard focus at the actual monitor scale. Check that the selected item is distinguishable without relying only on subtle color differences.
Limits & precautions
Explorer toolbar dark-mode support is a separate component and can be version-dependent. The 4.4.202 pre-release notes mention changes there; that is not evidence that every stable build has them.
Questions & answers
Is Windows dark mode enough?
Custom menu skins can have their own colors and variations.
Does a dark menu also theme every Windows dialog?
No. Open-Shell skinning should not be presented as a system-wide recoloring guarantee.
