Check whether the icon is missing from one shortcut, a custom menu item, or the whole menu. Verify the target and icon path before clearing caches. An XML settings backup does not embed every image used by a custom configuration.
What to do
- Open the affected shortcut outside Open-Shell. Confirm its target still exists and that the associated application was not moved or uninstalled.
- For a custom menu item, inspect the configured icon path. Replace paths pointing to a different user profile or an unavailable removable drive.
- Test a supplied menu style with the same shortcut. This helps separate a skin-layout problem from a missing icon resource.
- Review the project discussion about cached information before using a cache-reset option. Keep a settings export and avoid deleting unrelated Windows cache folders.
Check the result
Reopen the menu and check several ordinary applications plus the affected custom item. Confirm that the item still launches the correct target after changing its icon.
Limits & precautions
Cache refreshes do not restore deleted applications or missing custom images. Do not download executable icon packs simply to repair one broken shortcut.
Questions & answers
Will importing XML bring back my custom button and icons?
Not by itself. Keep the referenced resources and restore them to valid locations.
Should I clear every Windows icon cache?
No. Identify the broken item and use the narrowest documented correction first.
