Open-Shell is normally distributed as an installer with Windows shell integration. A ZIP containing source code is not a portable edition. Copying a program folder to a USB drive does not establish that all menu and Explorer components are correctly installed.
What to do
- Identify whether your goal is no administrator access, a USB launch tool, or moving your existing layout. These are different requirements and do not have the same solution.
- Inspect the project release assets. Distinguish the executable installer, debugging symbols, and source archives instead of treating every downloadable file as a usable application.
- To move a layout, export settings to XML and copy separately referenced skins and button images. Install Open-Shell on the destination PC through its normal setup.
- On a managed PC without installation rights, ask the administrator to evaluate deployment. Do not replace protected shell files or download an unidentified portable repack.
Check the result
On the destination computer, verify the installed version and test the imported layout. A working configuration import does not mean you have created a portable binary.
Limits & precautions
This site does not advertise a portable build that was not found among the cited release assets. Release packaging may change; review the actual assets before making deployment assumptions.
Questions & answers
Is Source code.zip a portable download?
No. It contains project source, not the normal installed program.
Can I move my settings without copying Program Files?
Yes. Use an XML export and keep external customization assets separately.
