Control Open-Shell update notifications

Update notifications are managed separately from your Start-menu layout. The project FAQ describes the updater and installer feature selection. Disabling.

Direct answer

Update notifications are managed separately from your Start-menu layout. The project FAQ describes the updater and installer feature selection. Disabling checks does not uninstall Open-Shell, and it leaves you responsible for reviewing future releases.

What to do

  1. Open the installed Open-Shell update utility if it is present. Inspect its check and notification preferences instead of editing network rules.
  2. Decide whether the computer should check automatically or follow a manual maintenance schedule. Managed computers should follow the administrator policy.
  3. To remove the update component, use the matching installer Change feature described in the FAQ. Keep the menu component selected when you still want it installed.
  4. Record the installed version and the project releases address. Schedule your own periodic review of relevant compatibility and security information when checks are disabled.

Check the result

Confirm that the menu still opens and that the selected update behavior persists. Check the installed features if notifications continue unexpectedly.

Limits & precautions

Blocking all GitHub traffic is not a precise updater control and may affect unrelated applications. A quiet updater does not mean the installed version is current.

Questions & answers

Does removing the updater remove the menu?

Not when installer feature selection retains the menu component.

Can I ignore releases forever after disabling checks?

No. You take over the responsibility for reviewing updates and compatibility changes.
