Classic Explorer is an optional Open-Shell component focused on File Explorer features, separate from the Start menu. Its historically documented toolbar and status-bar functions should be evaluated against the actual Explorer implementation in your Windows build.
What to do
- Confirm Classic Explorer was selected during setup. A working Open-Shell Start menu alone does not prove the Explorer component was installed.
- Open the Classic Explorer settings shortcut, not the menu settings dialog. Identify the single toolbar or navigation behavior you want to change.
- Apply one option and open a new Explorer window. Existing windows may not be a useful test of a newly configured extension.
- Compare ordinary folder navigation, opening files, and file dialogs. Report exactly which surface changes and which does not.
Check the result
Test the documented feature in a local folder and check that normal file operations still work. Save screenshots with the Windows build when comparing behavior across updates.
Limits & precautions
The project FAQ does not promise an added Up button in every application Open or Save dialog. Modern Explorer interfaces can also differ from the historical screenshots.
Questions & answers
Is it required for the Start menu?
No. It is an optional component with separate settings.
Will it change every file picker?
No. Application file dialogs and the Explorer window are different interfaces.
