Open-Shell guide

Customize the Classic Explorer toolbar

Use Toolbar Buttons in Classic Explorer settings when the toolbar is available on your Windows build. Rearrange only the commands you need and test each.

Direct answer

Use Toolbar Buttons in Classic Explorer settings when the toolbar is available on your Windows build. Rearrange only the commands you need and test each one. A missing toolbar should be diagnosed as a component or compatibility issue before editing menu settings.

What to do

  1. Check that Classic Explorer is installed and open its own settings dialog. Open-Shell Menu settings do not control the Explorer toolbar.
  2. Locate Toolbar Buttons and inspect the command list. Add or reorder a single item first so the effect is easy to identify.
  3. Open a fresh Explorer window in a local folder and test the command there. Some actions require a selected file or a particular folder context.
  4. Save the working configuration and confirm that adding buttons has not hidden important file-navigation controls at the window size you normally use.

Check the result

Each displayed button should perform its intended action without relying on a label alone. Test an action with no selection and with a file selected when appropriate.

Limits & precautions

Historical Explorer instructions may not map directly to the current Windows 11 command bar. Do not install unrelated browser or legacy IE components to make a missing toolbar appear.
