Transfer the XML configuration and the custom files it references, then validate the layout on the destination PC. Do not copy an entire Program Files directory as a migration method. Windows build, user paths, and installed applications may differ.
What to do
- On the source PC, export a dated XML file and collect custom skins and Start button images. Write down the menu style and display scale.
- Install the intended Open-Shell version on the destination PC and test a default menu first. This separates installation issues from migration issues.
- Import the XML and restore custom assets. Adjust paths that contain the old username, drive letter, or a folder that does not exist on the new computer.
- Test every pinned application and custom folder item. Remove or replace shortcuts to software that has not been installed on the destination PC.
Check the result
Sign in again on the new PC and check keyboard activation, menu dimensions, and the custom button. Keep the original export until the transferred layout works reliably.
Limits & precautions
An organization-managed PC may restrict installers or certain folder locations. Migration instructions do not override those policies or copy software licenses.
Questions & answers
Can XML install missing applications?
No. Menu links and application installation are separate.
Why does the layout look larger on the new PC?
Display scaling, resolution, and available fonts can change its appearance.
